The new hit Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians has been renewed for a second season as of Feb. 7, 2024, after a successful first season. The first season is based on Rick Riordan’s book The Lighting Thief, which was released in 2005 after being a bedtime story for Riordan’s son Haley.
Just like the book, the show follows two young demigods, Percy Jackson, played by Walker Scobell, Annabeth Chase, played by Leah Sava Jeffries, and one satyr, Grover Underwood, played by Aryan Simhadri, on a thrilling quest to return the lightning bolt to the god Zeus with challenges and friends along the way. The first season ends on a major cliffhanger, leaving viewers wanting plenty more that they will be receiving in the second season.
The second season will be based on the second book, The Sea of Monsters, where the protagonist trio must travel into the Sea of Monsters (otherwise known as the Bermuda Triangle) for another quest to save their camp after the magical border stops working. The second book brings minor characters like Clarisse La Rue and Luke Castellan into the forefront of the story and introduces new characters, Tyson and Thalia Grace. It does a great job of continuing the story after the cliffhanger and leaving viewers with more questions for the next three books.
Author Rick Riordan will also be in the writing process for the second season. He has taken creative liberties in season one and will most likely do the same for season two to keep fans on the edge of their seats, even if they know the story well. Nothing is confirmed yet, but it’s likely to be released in late 2024 or early 2025, and casting for new characters hasn’t been announced either.
Despite some backlash with the first season, Percy Jackson and The Olympians still has many new and old fans watching and enjoying to keep it on track for releasing five seasons for all five books. The series does a great job at taking the heart of the books and putting it into a show that can attract more people than the books can. Hopefully, it’ll encourage more people to read the Percy Jackson books and dive into the world of mythology through all of Riordan’s books.
