The Sayreville School District is making important changes to its curriculum with the introduction of a new Data Science program. Co-led by Dr. Mala Maharana, head of the Math, Computer Science, and Business Departments, and myself, senior Rishi Shah, the program is developed to prepare students for careers in fields like data analysis, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.
This program marks a major shift from the traditional Algebra 2 curriculum to one that follows new math standards set by the New Jersey Department of Education. It equips students with the practical skills needed to succeed in today’s technology-driven job market. In the near future, the district may even be able to offer the Data Science program as a supplemental or alternative option to Algebra 2 for students who are interested in pursuing technology-related fields. This would give students a practical, hands-on approach to learning mathematical concepts while also preparing them for high-demand careers in data science.
Using a Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach, the program provides hands-on learning experiences while helping students develop critical thinking, teamwork, and technical skills. Research shows a clear gap between theoretical education and practical skills, and this program aims to bridge that divide.
The Data Science program also addresses challenges specific to the district, such as the 29% failure rate in Algebra 2. By offering an engaging and relevant alternative, it gives students a chance to succeed in meaningful ways. The introduction of Data Science could provide an exciting and practical learning experience, catering to students who may find traditional math courses less engaging.
I am grateful for the opportunity to work with Dr. Maharana to research and develop this proposal. Together, we listened to students, surveyed their needs, and collaborated with educators to create a curriculum that aligns with the goals of the school community.
“This is not just a curriculum but a vision for the future,” Dr. Maharana explained. The program empowers students to explore the possibilities of High-wage jobs in Data Science and STEM while giving them the tools they need to overcome future challenges.
