The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society had their annual Dodgeball Tournament in the Bomb Shelter on Wednesday Feb. 26. The tournament consisted of 2 alumni teams, 2 teacher teams, and numerous student teams.
Student council helped sell tickets upon entering, which among other donations amounted to $3000 raised. Senior Brooke Attix began the night by singing the National Anthem before principal Mr. Gluchowski introduced the crowd to 2011 alumni Gianine Gunther who is fighting lymphoma of her lung. She attended with her husband and three children, and she received a standing ovation for her strength. Gunther is the sister of Mr. Angelo Palma, the theatre teacher at SWMHS, as Mr. Patsy Palma, middle school teacher.
The Impact Squad was giving out lollipops with encouraging messages at the entrance. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society also had a table set up where you could write a message for who you were supporting, which is now displayed on the Bomb Shelter wall.
A team member of last year’s winners, the Purple Cobras, Mariami Nemsadze said, “Being apart of this charity was eye opening on how Leukemia patients battle everyday for their lives and makes participating even more exciting.”
Throughout the games DJ Lampkin played music to hype the crowd and players. In the end the Chippers were crowned Champions and won a trophy for their achievement.
Alec Kenny, from this year’s winning team said, “Playing in this tournament was amazing, not only did I have fun, but it was also for an amazing cause worth supporting.”
