On March 21, 12 Sayreville Leo club members had the opportunity to attend the 47th Annunal Lions Day With The United Nations in New York City to learn about the importance of service.
The Leos began their day at the UN building, where they viewed artwork and exhibits showcasing the history of the United Nations, including various technologies used over the years to record official meetings. From an observatory window, Leos could watch live meetings where hundreds of representatives from different countries spoke.

Then the Leos went to Westin Hotel where they had an opportunity to meet other Leos over food. At the meeting was International Leo-lions president, Fabrício Oliveira. Leo-lion Board Liaison Nicole Luk, Leo-Lion international Ishaan Sudan, and Leo Incisu Dönmez Alkan. They played a game with the Leos on the Leo-Lion history where they won fun prices.
Finally, and maybe most importantly, the Leos met hundreds of other Leo-lions from all around the world in a conference at the UN. They connected with individuals from Germany, West Africa, Peru, and beyond, all united by their dedication to service.
Speakers at the conference included Rebecca Davis, who co-directed and co-produced the film Join or Die to emphasize the importance of joining a club; Incisu Dönmez Alkan, who is part of the World Food Programme; and David Roberts, a representative of the United Nations Association of the USA. Following the speeches, a panel of experts answered the question: What is the future of service?
The Leos took away many powerful lessons from the experience, such as the importance of creating opportunities when none exist and valuing participation over efficiency. They hope to apply what they’ve learned to improve their own community.
Leo Adalia Teah described the experience as “a very exciting and interactive experience. It was really fun getting to meet representatives from all over the world.”
