“When Life Gives You Tangerines” is one of Netflix’s new shows in 2025. Directed by Kim Won-seok, this new K-drama is a hit with viewers all around the world. While K-dramas take on a variety of genres, ranging from light-hearted rom-coms like Boys Over Flowers, to action-filled thrillers like Bloodhounds, this one is particularly emotional.
Set in Jeju (an island off the coast of Korea) and the cities of Seoul and Busan, the timeline ranges from the 1960’s to present day. It follows the life of a young girl, Oh Ae-sun (played by popular actress IU) living in poverty throughout adolescence, teenage years, life as a newlywed, all the way to her senior years. At the same time, it follows the life of her daughter (also played by IU). Though the timeline can get confusing, the director has a way of tying events from the past and future together to create a whole, meaningful story. The show follows themes of trouble, traditions, love, family, community, and perseverance.
I can only describe this show and its ending as bittersweet. The characters continue to find love and happiness in each other throughout the difficult times they go through. Though this was the saddest show I have ever watched (every episode made me cry), I absolutely love it. I would 100% recommend people to watch this series at least once in their lives. The phenomenal storyline, visuals, acting, production, and soundtrack all contributed to what I believe is one of Netflix’s best shows.
