On May 22, 2025, Edison Mayor Sam Joshi officially honored 500 Smiles: Edison Edition with a proclamation at the Edison Municipal Complex. The project was created and led by me, Rishi Shah, a senior at Sayreville War Memorial High School. The initiative focuses on helping senior citizens and supporting local small businesses through handwritten cards and outreach efforts.
During our meeting, Mayor Joshi and myself spoke about the importance of building strong, connected communities through small but meaningful acts of kindness. The project was praised for bringing people together across different age groups and backgrounds.
This project is part of the Small Business Supporter Initiative, a youth-led nonprofit that focuses on strengthening communities through service and support for small businesses.
How the Project Works
500 Smiles: Edison Edition plans to deliver 500 handmade cards to senior citizens in Edison. Each card includes a personal message to show care and appreciation. These cards are meant to brighten someone’s day and remind seniors that they are remembered and valued.
At the same time, the project supports local businesses by promoting them throughout the campaign. Shops like barbershops, restaurants, pharmacies, and markets are featured and encouraged to connect with the community in new ways.
Why Edison Was Chosen
Edison for this version of the project because of the town’s strong leadership, cultural diversity, and focus on growth. Edison’s reputation for community pride and innovation made it an ideal place to expand the campaign.
What the Project Helps Solve
Senior Isolation
Many older adults experience loneliness. These cards help remind them they are not alone.
Small Business Recognition
Local businesses are important to Edison’s identity. The campaign helps bring more attention to them.
Community Connection
The project brings together different groups in town, encouraging more interaction and pride across generations.
Looking Ahead
500 Smiles: Edison Edition marks a key milestone for The Small Business Supporter Initiative. It is one of the first times the project has been officially recognized by a township.
Rishi Shah hopes that this model can inspire similar efforts in other towns across New Jersey and beyond. Through youth leadership, community support, and simple acts of kindness, 500 Smiles shows that meaningful change can start with just one thoughtful message at a time.
