With 2026 upon us, everyone is wondering about their plans for the future and how they would like to incorporate their resolutions for the new year. Some students might be thinking about getting through high school while others could be thinking about college or potential career paths. Nonetheless it’s important to be prepared and confident for what lies ahead. Here are some helpful tips to make your 2026 the best it can be.
1. Get Involved
While we might think high school is focused just on academics, the truth is it’s not. It is crucial that we as high school students join clubs and take initiative because that’s what colleges are looking for, not just how well you performed in your classes. Being a part of extracurricular activities not only showcases our passion towards a specific cause, but it also helps you learn and grow from the experiences in those clubs, making you aware as a person where your interests lie and if you should consider continuing throughout the rest of high school. Moreover, joining such activities will also help you get an idea of what careers you should potentially think about pursuing in the future.
2. Academics
As we progress through the school year, we as students get a feel of what classes we excel at better than others and this helps us to evaluate if we should consider enrolling in AP or Honors for those various subjects. Classes like AP or Honors help us to build upon the skills and knowledge from the previous course and apply them in different ways. Additionally, enrolling in these types of courses early on allows you to challenge yourself while applying your interests to do so. Lastly, other things like building a portfolio on some of your best accomplishments or learning to master note-taking strategies will help you down the road in achieving your long-term goals for the future more efficiently.
3. Future Planning
Many students become more aware of their interests throughout their high school journey and begin to think about potential career paths for the future. Others, however, might still may be unsure or confused as to what careers they should be thinking about pursing and that’s okay. If this sounds like you, consider talking to your school counselors or teachers so they can assist you by making some suggestions regarding careers tailored to your interests. On the other hand, if you’re someone who has an idea of what they might want to pursue in the future, then you could research some colleges or visit different campuses to get an idea if it’s for the right fit for you. Finally, consider researching scholarship opportunities early on to see what you would be interested in taking to help you get accepted into the college of your choice.
4. Personal Growth & Development
Lastly, ensure you’re getting enough sleep, eating well, and managing stress efficiently to support your academic and personal growth. If you’re having trouble managing stress, try doing some breathing exercises or going on a little jog. Continually make sure you set aside time for relaxation, family interactions, and your hobbies to avoid burnout. Doing these simple tasks will help not only reduce stress but also help you prioritize the tasks that are crucial to you.
