My name is Regina George, and I’ve been a massive deal for as long as I can remember. I’ve been such a massive deal, in fact, that I had a movie and a musical made about me. Once again, because I’m a massive deal.
There’s some people in high school who sing and dance, and they do these shows called musicals. Cady’s friend Damian loves them. But other people – normal people – like to watch movies. “Mean Girls” (AKA the best piece of film you will ever watch) happens to be in both categories. So considering my opinions are the best, I’m going to tell you exactly how I feel about Mean Girls the movie and Mean Girls the musical.
So like, Mean Girls the movie came out in 2004 and it was written by Tina Fey. Totes fun fact: Tina Fey played Ms. Norbury in the movie. She also wrote the musical adaptation in 2017, alongside Jeff Richmond and Nell Benjamin, who focused on music and lyrics.
The movie and the musical share many of the same plot lines: Cady moves to America, and Janis and Damian have her spy on The Plastics (the best clique in Northshore High School history). After she gets invited to eat lunch with us, Cady starts crushing on my ex-boyfriend Aaron, decides to dethrone me of my “Queen Bee” title (corny, I know), and ends up turning into the plastic she was trying to take down.
Both shows end the same: I get stuck in a stupid neck brace and everyone sings kumbaya and forgets why they even fought because…friendship! Cady wins spring fling queen (which was mine for the entirety of high school, but I’m like not even mad, really) and of course she gets the guy. Pretty boring except for the best parts: the parts with me.
The musical makes some small changes from the original fim, which is totally fine, I guess. Even though my little sister is written out of the musical, and Ms. Norbury and Mr. Duvall aren’t as prominently featured. As long as everyone remembers that it’s my show. It’s my franchise. Cady wouldn’t have even been known at this stupid school if she wasn’t so obsessed with taking everything I had.
When it comes to costuming, the movie does it better. Trust me, I know fashion. The original Broadway musical was lacking in the 2000’s high school fashion department. I wouldn’t be caught DEAD in leather pants. Let’s not start the rumor that I chose to wear them. (I still look good, though. Duh.) In the SWMHS production, you’ll see lots of modern-day fashion.
Everyone knows Mean Girls because of me (what?…it’s true). So, I guess the biggest difference between the musical and the movie is that the musical focuses much more on Cady. That being said, if you like me more (and why wouldn’t you?), watch the movie. If you prefer Cady…watch the musical, I guess. Just be warned: there’s lots singing and dancing. You’ll probably attract the show choir and band kids. And that weirdo, Damian.
But, even I have to admit the musical is still super fun to watch, and, most importantly, it makes me look good. The music is amazing, and I have the best songs, which is all that matters. Plus, it’s not one of those shows where you have to watch the movie to understand the musical (but if you watched them back- to-back, you’d obviously see the differences).
Even though musicals sound totally lame, they aren’t THAT bad, I promise. Plus, it’s also another chance to see me!
Decide for yourself which is better. Come see Mean Girls at the JBJ PAC on March 13 & 14. You can purchase tickets here, or buy them at the door.
Seriously, come see it. I’m shameless, I love the attention.
You can also participate in our Mean Girls Spirit Week, from March 9-13.

Now that I’ve been writing in this stupid book for an hour, I’ve gotta burn these pages. Maybe I’ll call Aaron. Keep this secret for me, and I’ll let you sit with us!
Later Losers!
