On Thursday, February 27, the Sayreville Bombers went up against the South Brunswick Vikings in an intense match-up that ended up being an all-time classic in the Sayreville history books.
At home, the Bombers were looking to defend their home court in the first round of the NJSIAA First Round Playoffs (State Playoffs), which was the last home game for senior starters Ziyan Jones, Chidi Chukwurah, and Sam Jones – all who have made a long lasting impact through swishing shots and locking down their opponents. With great support from fellow Sayreville Bombers, they were ready for the challenge and to hopefully move onto the 16 team bracket, where the Bombers were ranked 7th seed.
When the clock struck around 6:55 p.m., the lights started to dim, and the players waited for their names to be announced. One by one, the cheers from the electric student crowd started to rise as players were announced, boiling over for the 2 leading scorers in Sayreville history, Sam Jones and Chidi Chukwurah.
Some reports state it was the most spine-chilling moment in Sayreville basketball history as the gym was pumping. At 7:00 p.m., the ball was tipped off and recovered by Sam Jones as the game began in the Bombers favor – a leading theme for the entire night.
As the game progressed, Sam Jones was creating plays and consistently scoring middle-range, 2-point shots. Ziyan Jones was also getting himself in the mix as his 3-pointers kept dropping and sending the crowd into a frenzy as he soon accumulated 12 points.
Chidi Chukwurah was a very important figure in slowing down the Vikings on the defensive side of the ball and being a rebound warrior, scoring 9 points and 6 rebounds. South Brunswick, however, did make some nice shots and were putting up a mini fight for Sayreville, but it was nothing that the Bombers couldn’t handle as they pushed through and won in a blowout, 82-49.
As the Bombers move on in the NJSIAA state tournament, they will go against the No. 2 seed, Marlboro, on Saturday, February 28, in a match they will have to win or else it is over for their season.
This game was a classic that will be remembered in Sayreville history. No matter what happens in the rest of the playoffs, what these boys were able to accomplish both in their own feats and the team’s achievement as a whole is truly remarkable and nothing short of amazing. They were able to bring together the crowd and create long lasting memories that will be looked upon in Sayreville basketball history.
