Imagine if someone asked you what you do in your spare time. What would you say?
I used to have a hard time answering. Eventually, I realized that I simply just spent a lot of time on my phone. A lot of time.
Whenever I’d be on my phone constantly, everything around me seemed like a chore, a dreadful chore. Anything I did besides scrolling on my feed was not fun. And after scrolling for hours straight, I’d feel guilty for not doing anything productive.
I don’t believe everyone is constantly on their phones. School takes up the majority of our time, so whenever we do have time, we just want to breathe.
It honestly is a struggle to change a routine and to start new hobbies, too. But when I started disciplining my screen time, it was a life changer.
I have been a pianist since the age of 8, but I have never pursued the art of it. I just played it, I never enjoyed it. I decided to take only 15 minutes per day to engage in the art of music. As I play, the music drowns the stressful parts of my day, and puts me at ease.
Other students have also relied on hobbies to keep them occupied and productive.
Arina Lisnychi, a senior at Sayreville War Memorial High School, enjoys painting, hiking, and skiing. Every time I talk to her, she never fails to mention these engaging hobbies.
Junior Kylie Walker enjoys drawing, listening to music, learning about the music industry, and designing houses.
Try getting a hobby if you find yourself mindlessly scrolling, and you will not regret it!
